New World Youth Orchestras

March 31, 2018

New World Youth Orchestras was founded in 1982 by Susan Kitterman as an ensemble that would provide a unique, high-quality musical experience for young musicians in Central Indiana. Under Mrs. Kitterman’s direction, New World has matured artistically, grown in size, increased its performance and educational opportunities, and received high acclaim from the community. The 100-member, fully instrumented New World Youth Symphony Orchestra is comprised of members ranging in age from 12 to 18 years. Over the next decades the organization expanded to include the New World Philharmonic Orchestra and the New World Youth Concert Orchestra, to serve the needs of younger players seeking orchestral opportunities.

In May 2015, the New World Youth Orchestras entered into the next phase of its history when Founder and Artistic Director Susan Kitterman stepped down. Her successor was Adam Bodony, an alumnus of the New World Youth Orchestras, DePauw University, and Indiana University. In April 2016, the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut followed by a full-length feature concert at Orchestra Hall, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in April 2017. This year, the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra makes history again as the first non-scholastic orchestra to participate in Music for All’s National Orchestra Festival.

Participation in NWYO gives each student the opportunity to play with some of the most talented young musicians from Indiana, work with professional coaches from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and other nearby universities, and experience guest conductors and speakers. Students not only experience the joy of making music with other dedicated musicians, but they also develop a deeper understanding of orchestral playing and develop relationships with new people who share their passion for music.

One recent graduate said of her involvement with New World, " Not only did New World teach me how to play in an orchestra, it also taught me how to play well with others within the orchestra. Too many times we are only told to learn the notes on the page. But New World went deeper than that. I am grateful for the opportunities New World has given me and the lifelong friendships that came with it.”

NWYO is now scheduling auditions for the Concert (strings only through 8th grade), Philharmonic, (strings, winds, and brass through 12th grade), and Symphony (full orchestra through 12th grade) Orchestras. Further details and the audition application are available on our website www.nwyso.org.
